Sustainability

CO₂ reduction starts with transport

Around 82% lower CO₂ emissions per tkm than road freight transport.*

Around 76% lower CO₂ emissions per tkm than heavy trucks.*

Highest CO₂ emissions per tkm – therefore used specifically for the last mile.*

INTERMODAL TRANSPORT REDUCES CO₂ EMISSIONS

Intermodal container transport reduces CO₂ emissions by shifting transport from road to more climate-friendly modes such as rail and inland waterways. These transport methods produce significantly lower emissions per tonne-kilometre than traditional road freight transport.

The transport sector is one of the largest sources of CO₂ emissions in Europe. Optimodal Nederland B.V. therefore focuses on sustainable transport solutions and combines rail, water and road to create efficient intermodal logistics chains.

By shifting containers to rail and inland waterways, emissions can be significantly reduced compared to purely road-based transport.

Benefits of intermodal transport solutions

  • Up to 82% lower CO₂ emissions compared to long-distance truck transport
  • Less congestion and lower environmental impact
  • Efficient use of existing infrastructure
  • More sustainable logistics in European freight transport

Intermodal container transport is therefore considered one of the most effective solutions for reducing CO₂ emissions in European freight transport.

Our goal: Maximum transport performance with a minimal environmental footprint.

CLIMATE TARGET 2040

Sustainability at Optimodal Nederland B.V. is not a promise for the future – it has been part of our daily practice for many years.

Early on, we implemented a transport strategy focused on reducing CO₂ emissions and consistently shifted transports from road to rail and inland waterways.

By shifting transport modes, we sustainably reduce emissions while easing the burden on road infrastructure and the environment.

In recognition of our commitment, we were awarded the “Company of the Future” seal by the City of Neuss in 2025. This distinction confirms our strategic and long-term sustainability approach.

At the same time, we align ourselves with European climate targets. The European Union aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels.

Our mission is clear: we aim to contribute by continuously expanding sustainable transport solutions and strengthening intermodal transport as a climate-friendly alternative.

SUSTAINABILITY IN DAILY OPERATIONS

Sustainability at Optimodal Nederland B.V. is part of our daily operations. In addition to consciously choosing sustainable transport modes, we continuously optimize our operational and internal processes.

We take a holistic view of every transport chain and identify targeted opportunities for improvement along the entire value chain.

  • Empty Container Management

Through intelligent planning, we reduce empty runs and avoid unnecessary emissions.

  • Terminal and Partner Coordination

Optimized time slots and close coordination help minimize waiting times and empty movements.

  • Step-by-Step Digitalization

We continuously develop our processes and systematically drive digitalization in order to reduce paper consumption and increase transparency.

  • Efficient Planning & Mobile Office

Precise scheduling and flexible working models reduce travel distances, energy consumption and resource usage.

Sustainability for us is achieved through consistent optimization at every level.
